A 47-YEAR-OLD man from Mapulula Village in Plumtree Matabeleland South Province has appeared in court for brutally assaulting his seven-year-old son because he had lied about not receiving his school report.
Dignity Matshemela Moyo appeared before Plumtree magistrate Joshua Nembaware charged with physical abuse.
He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment of which six months of his sentence were suspended for a period of five years on condition that he does not commit any offense of which physical abuse is an element for which upon conviction he is sentenced to imprisonment without the option of a fine.
The remaining six months were further suspended on condition that he complete 210 hours of community service at Osabeni Primary School.
The State case, as presented by prosecutor Selestine Madziwa is that on 10 August 2024 at around 8pm, the accused came home drunk and found his son already asleep.
He woke him up and started questioning him why he had lied about not receiving his school report.
This was after the accused had checked with his son’s classmate from next door who attended the same school and they showed him his school report.
The accused then realised that his child had not been going to school. He then took a whip and assaulted him several times on the face and back.
As a result of the assault the boy sustained injuries, and the matter was reported to the police, leading to his father’s arrest.
