Daily takings disappear from cash box

Freedom Mupanedemo Midlands Correspondent
A Gweru woman employed as a shopkeeper recently got the shock of her life when all her daily takings disappeared from the cash box soon after throwing in a soiled $2 note which she received from a client. The shocked cashier, Ms Acquilina Tsungai, quickly followed the client who had just left the shop only to find him behind the shop counting notes with a  friend.
According to court documents, Ms Tsungai then quickly alerted some neighbours who chased after the suspicious client, Forest Masango and effected a citizen’s arrest before surrendering him to the police at Nehanda Police Station in Mkoba.

Masango, of House Number 252 Rutendo suburb, Redcliff, yesterday appeared before Gweru magistrate Miss Gertrude Mayonyose facing theft charges.

He pleaded guilty to the charge and was remanded in custody for sentencing tomorrow.
For the State, Mr Jonathan Manda told the court that on 18 July, at about 7.30pm, Ms Tsungai was on duty at Takudzwanashe Grocery Shop.
Masango entered the shop in the company of Mr Cuthbert Bango where he used a soiled $2 note to buy two packets of maputi.

Mr Manda said Ms Tsungai took the $2 note and placed it in a small cardboard box used as a cash box, and went to the counter to pick the maputi.
Mr Manda said Ms Tsungai then discovered that Masango and Bango had suddenly disappeared when she wanted to give them their items.
She checked her cash box only to find the cash had disappeared.

Mr Manda said Ms Tsungai went out of the shop and saw Masango and Bango counting the cash.
When Masango was taken to police, he was searched and found with $114 cash in his pockets.
The stolen money was $148 and $114 was recovered.
