THE third edition of Imiklomelo kaDakamela held in Nkayi, Matabeleland North on Friday and Saturday lived up to their high billing as festivities brought life to a standstill in what is usually a sedate district.
While most of the focus was on traditional leaders from around the country, who attended the event, the turnout from citizens from far and wide highlighted the growth of a ceremony that is meant to recognise the outstanding efforts of Zimbabweans in various fields.
In the dust and heat of Nkayi, some of Zimbabwe and South Africa’s most recognisable personalities, including Nomashawekazi “Lady Tshawe” Damasane, Madlela Skhobokhobo, Nkululeko Dube, South Africa-based actor Chrispen Nyathi, among others, rubbed shoulders with local traditional royalty at an event that has become one of the most significant celebrations of culture in the Matabeleland region.
Dakamela Primary School, where the ceremony was held over the two days became a trade fair or sorts, as some of the most recognisable companies and brands exhibited their services and wares to a fascinated public.
Speaking during the event, Chief Nkalakatha of Nkayi said he was pleasantly surprised at just how quickly the concept had captured the imagination of Zimbabweans.
“I have been coming here from the beginning. I remember, we were not so many when we started. However, there are now a lot more people and this shows that the awards are growing. It is my desire to see that our culture, the way we dress and the way we conduct ourselves, should never change. We are here at the mercy and goodwill of our ancestors and we hope that we continue honouring them with such initiatives,” he said.
Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Sports, Arts and Culture, Mr Nicholas Moyo said the Government had decided to throw its full weight behind the awards, as the ceremony had shown that it was a good vehicle for national cultural awareness and celebration.
“I would like to congratulate Chief Dakamela for uplifting our nation and giving us a chance to recognise who we are.
“We are thankful because such a big thought is an indication of the bright future ahead of us. We have taken a resolution as the Government to support this initiative because it shows the power of culture and the unity that our people have,” he said.
Deputy Minister of Local Government and Public Works, Albert Mavhunga said the award ceremony had become an apt illustration of the Government’s resolution that the citizens of Zimbabwe had the duty to develop their own nation.
“The President always says the country is built by its citizens. What today has shown me, is that there are people here who are ready to build their region.
“There’s a chief who is ready to build the place and people under his rule. No one will be left behind, the President is looking after them, the Government is looking out for them and their chief is taking care of them,” he said.
