THE Government has successfully stocked 535 000 fingerlings across 67 dams in all the eight rural provinces, in a significant initiative aimed at enhancing food security and economic growth.
This effort is part of a broader strategy to strengthen the fish farming sector, which is poised to make substantial contributions to national nutrition and income generation.
The allocation of fingerlings has been executed strategically, with Mashonaland Central which has the highest number of dams at 16, receiving 150 000, followed by Masvingo with 101 000 finerlings in 15 dams.
Other provinces, including Mashonaland East, West, Matabeleland North, South, and Midlands, have also benefited, showcasing a nationwide commitment to aquaculture.
Chief director of the Agricultural Advisory and Rural Development Services, Mr Leonard Munamati, emphasised the urgency of the initiative.
“Fish farming is not just about food, but it’s a pathway to economic empowerment,” said Mr Munamati in a recent weekly update.
This year alone, 10 600 fish ponds have been stocked with 58 000 fingerlings, reflecting a swift response to the increasing demand for fish. Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development Deputy Minister, Davis Marapira, has underscored the need for farmers to diversify into fish farming.
“This is a positive step towards diversity, improving nutrition and incomes,” he said.
