FREEMAN-INSPIRED dancehall musician Kelvin Musa has joined a bandwagon of Zim dancehall artistes by releasing a compilation album which carries some of his new singles that were released last year.Musa was born in the sprawling suburb of Sakubva 28 years ago before relocating to South Africa to pursue his singing career which is in its infancy but growing rapidly.
Some of the hit singles contained in the compilation are Pandaigara ndichikura, Monalisa, Pandakatanga kurova ngoma, I do and The other one.
Musa ventured into music in 2012 following his heartbreaking groin injury as a soccer player in South Africa.
He quit soccer after he had stints with several teams such as Super Tigers Juniors, Claskca FC, the now defunct Mutare Farm Supply and Chiredzi-based Mkwasine FC.
Ras Dop, Crazy Dee, Anoe Vybz feature on the compilation album.
Musa said his lyrics were inspired by dynamic lifestyles of young people in the ghetto. He urges them to live a responsible life, prioritise education and desist from drugs.
“I advise fellow ghetto youths to keep focused in life and pursue their dreams with determination.
Zim dancehall has been associated with failure, violence and drug abuse, but there is more to that genre that people need to understand.
“Love and betrayal are also some of the themes that I sing about,” Musa said.
Musa will be embarking on a whirlwind tour early this month and will start by staging a live performance in Nyanyadzi on January 31 before he comes down to Mutare for a series of shows.
“I intend to market my songs locally. I have realised that my music is more popular here in Mzansi than in Zimbabwe.
“I am still a novice in this game. I hope to reach where other renowned dancehall musicians like Freeman have reached.
“He is my role model and I hope to reach his standards,” he said.
