Dancer Fredrick ‘Rico’ King will represent Zimbabwe at the Amazing Festival in Livingstone, Zambia, from August 14 to 18.
The four-day event will celebrate Afro-Latin dance and focus on popular styles such as salsa, bachata, and kizomba.
Dubbed the ‘Vic Falls AfroLatin Experience’, the festival aims to promote Zambian heritage and tourism.
In an exclusive interview, Rico said this event will showcase the growing Latin dance scene in the two countries.
“Many people in Zambia were unaware that there is a vibrant Latin community here, and I hope this festival will change that,” he said.
Rico, a seasoned dancer with over 10 years of competitive ballroom and Latin dance experience, has been instrumental in fostering social dance movements in Zimbabwe since 2016.
He started by hosting salsa nights, which later evolved into the kizomba movement that is bringing people from diverse backgrounds together through dance.
“There are no other representatives from Zimbabwe at this festival, and my goal is to connect with international dancers and bring that experience back home,” he said. “I want to show them that we have a unique dance culture that deserves to be recognised.”
The Amazing Festival will feature a variety of dance workshops and social parties, allowing participants to learn and enjoy Afro-Latin dance.
Rico will lead a workshop to share his knowledge and the distinctive dance style that has developed in Zimbabwe.
He hopes that this festival will not only raise awareness about the Latin dance culture in Zimbabwe but also encourage more international artists to enrich the local dance scene.
