MUTARE City Council is working on restoring electricity in the Maonde section of Sakubva, which had gone for years without power.

Thousands of families have been living in the dark for two years following a power blackout after they were cut off in October 2019.

The other affected areas were Matida Flats and Chimoio Flats.

City mayor, Councillor Blessing Tandi, speaking during a State of the City Address recently said work had started on reconnecting electricity to Maonde.

“The Maonde re-electrification project is still work in progress, with installation at an advanced stage. This project requires US$68 000 to complete. There is no dedicated funding for this project, and council is carrying out the task on its own, thanks to the street lights levy we are collecting from residents,” said Cllr Tandi.

He revealed that the local authority had managed to repair 720 street lights in the city which were malfunctioning.

“We managed to repair 720 street lights out of the 1 900 that we have. Although only a handful are paying the levy, this is making a difference in our efforts to light up the whole city,” he said.

Cllr Tandi encouraged residents and businesses to continue paying their bills and levies to enable council to improve on service delivery.

He reiterated council’s commitment to improving and turning Mutare into a world class city.
