THE Government is determined to ensure that information communication technologies (ICTs) become the backbone of the country’s economy as data is now the most traded item in the world, a Government official has said.

Speaking during the Executive Development Programme Graduation Ceremony held in Harare through the partnership between TelOne and Africa University, Information Communication Technology and Courier Service Minister Dr Jenfan Muswere said ICT was a key enabler to facilitate the development of the country in line with President Mnangagwa’s vision.

The graduation has seen a total of 22 senior management staff at TelOne being conferred with leadership certificates for completing an Executive Development course with the thrust to improve knowledge, skills and broaden their leadership perspectives.

Dr Muswere said ICT drivers should be well-versed with trends to resolve the country’s industry and economic challenges.

“We need those that are driving our organisations to be at par with world ICT trends and new leadership styles to develop our nation and be able to resolve industry and economic challenges,” he said.

“As Government, we fully support all your efforts as we are aware of the value that human skills have as an economic enabler. Our country needs the leadership capacity with requisite skills to take the country forward and to attain the Vision of a middle-income economy by 2030 as enunciated by President Mnangagwa.”

Dr Muswere said the partnership was critical as it embraced Education 5.0 for industrial renaissance.

Africa University interim vice chancellor Professor Pamela Machakanja hailed the partnership.

“Africa University strives to remain relevant to its operating context partly by developing programmes that answer to the ever-changing needs to our environment,” she said.

“Strategic relationships with a reputable corporate organisation such as Telone enables us to continuously reflect on our offerings and tailor our training programmes to match the expectations of the communities we serve.”

TelOne managing director Mrs Chipo Mtasa said she was grateful for the partnership that had produced tangible results.

“I am delighted that we got the opportunity to partner an institution such as Africa University as today we are gathered to celebrate the Executive Development Programme which they facilitated,” she said.
