THOMAS Mapfumo’s nephew, Kurai Makore, has conceded he feels pressure from fans to match or surpass his uncle.
The 34-year-old, who thrilled fans at the just-ended Africa Explosion Gig, said he was grateful to the US-based Chimurenga guru.
He, however, told H-Metro he was now feeling the heat. “Pressure used to be low but it’s coming now due to my consistency.” He said he was grateful to be compared with Mukanya even though it’s not possible to match him.
“Those are actually big boots for me to fill.” Kurai, who has on many occasions been labelled a copycat of Mukanya, from the voice to his stage antics, said he wasn’t imitating his uncle.
“I’m not a copycat, it’s just that I was born in the family of Chimurenga music, there are people who are copycats not me. This is my blood, I am not a stranger to Chimurenga.”
Makore has two albums to his credit — ‘‘Gara Unzwe’’ and ‘‘Ngoma Kurira.’’
