This, coupled with poor funding has seen most of the roads, which are due for upgrading after the lapse of their 15-year lifespan sustained by minor repairs.
In an interview recently, DDF provincial coordinator Mr Erikano Chikande, said Magunje-Chidamoyo Road got funding for major re-gravelling.
He said only about 220 of the more than 1 000 kilometres of road in Hurungwe district were in good shape while the rest were in need of major upgrading.
“We have to make do with what we have so that the roads are usable. However, due to lack of funding we can only do so much,” he said.
The motorised grader, which has almost come to the end of its lifespan owing to constant breakdowns, has become largely unreliable.
He said the roads become difficult to maintain with time because the gravel is washed away by the rains, exposing the bed.
Mr Chikande said the province needs at least one motorised grader for each of the six districts to ensure that most roads are maintained.
The unit relies on aged and archaic towed graders.
Mashonaland West provincial Governor and Resident Minister Faber Chidarikire commended DDF for defying the odds to ensure the roads are usable.
