BRENDON de Jonge recorded his best start for the year when he carded a five-under-par 67 to lie in fifth place after the opening round of the Farmers Insurance Open, at the Torrey Pines Golf Club in San Diego, California.

The Zimbabwean was in good form on Thursday on a day former world number one Tiger Woods withdrew because of a back injury.

The burly golfer birdied the three opening holes only to drop a shot on the par-four-hole number seven on the first nine.

De Jonge had a par on the next hole before closing with a birdie on number nine.

He had three pars on the openings holes of his home nine which were followed by two birdies before he dropped a shot on number 17 which he made up for with a birdie on 18.

De Jonge has now played eight tournaments on the PGA Tour since the 2014-15 season began and only missed the cut twice.

He is now the 86th best golfer in the world.

He trails the pacesetter Nicholas Thompson by three shots after the opening round.

On five-under-par 67, De Jonge was tied with Jhonattan Vegas, Freddie Jacobson, Chad Campbell, Chris Kirk and Ian Poulter.
