A PRE-DAWN mining disaster turned a desperate gold rush into a bloodbath after a shaft at Bere SP Mining syndicate in Masvingo collapsed, burying alive three miners and leaving six others with severe injuries.
The police reported on X that the tragedy struck around 3 AM on Saturday at Village 1, Boss Mine in Mashava, Masvingo, when the unstable tunnel gave way, trapping the illegal panners underground in a scramble for the precious metal.
The dead were rushed to Masvingo General Hospital mortuary, while the injured—some with crushed limbs and internal bleeding—were admitted for emergency treatment.
This latest incident highlights the deadly risks of artisanal mining, where desperate diggers brave perilous pits for meagre rewards.
