FOLLOWING his divorce from Chicken Inn, ex-Warriors captain Danny “Deco” Phiri has hinted that he might join Southern Region Division One side, Hwange.
Phiri (34) went back to Gamecocks last year after having spent one season at ex-Premier League outfit Bulawayo Chiefs.
He joined Amakhosi Amahle after he had parted ways with South Africa’s Golden Arrows, a club he joined after he was exported by Gamecocks in 2016 and he amassed 97 games for Abafana Bes’thende across all competitions in his defensive midfield role.
“I’m still club hunting and yet to make a decision but all things being equal, I should be going, I should be going to Hwange. At 34, I still believe I can still play,” said the former Warriors and Golden Arrows defensive midfield player.
It has been rumoured that Phiri had been offered a juniors’ coaching job at Gamecocks, which he has not been keen to take.
Chipangano provides home to another ex-Gamecocks captain Felix “SaNicky” Chindungwe who is now the club’s kit manager.
Another of Phiri’s ex-teammates at Gamecocks, Canaan Nkomo, is also with the coalminers while Thabani Goredema left the club at the beginning of last year.
At Golden Arrows, Phiri was one of four Zimbabwean players with the other three being Kudakwashe Mahachi, Devine Lunga and Knox Mutizwa.
The four played regularly and before his move to Arrows, Phiri was one of the few locally based players to command a regular place in the Warriors Africa Cup of Nations squads.
He was a stand-out player for the Gamecocks as they marched to their maiden Castle Lager Championship under the guidance of Antipas and Prince Matore in 2015.
The holding midfielder was as a result voted Castle Lager Soccer Star of the Year in 2015.—@FungaiMuderere
