Define your casual wear

Tafadzwa Zimoyo : Fashion Talk 263

The season for fashion shows and workshops is upon us. Are you ready? It seems Zimbabwe is keeping with international trends when it comes to such events because they are now only happening according to season compared to previous years where you could be invited almost every week to a fashion show. Yes, we all love fashion but too much of it will drain the brain leaving us with naked minds. All these shows are somehow similar to an extent that you end up thinking today’s show is a rendition of yesterday’s.

To make it different why not try working with themes and be original?

Those leaves and paper dresses are good for the ramp but who in Zimbabwe would buy and wear them.

Of late, we have heard about the elephant dresses, wired hats and they made headlines in the newspapers with some local celebrities donning them but it seems it ended there.

We are not yet ready for the Lady Gaga bug unless it is about missing the style or dressing for disaster.

Well what we call winter is coming and that means you need to upgrade your wardrobe.

When it comes to winter essentials there are few things more crucial than a great pair of jeans.

Denim jeans are a must have for everyone especially this coming season.

From skinny, white-wash, plain white, blue, flared, silhouette and boyfriends among other styles are dozens of options when it comes to owning a denim pair.

If you are going out to buy yourself one or two or three, may I recommend 70s silhouette. That is the must-have item which you will need in the coming months.

To carry of the look for this season, you need to team up your 70s jeans with a coloured top. If you are slim ultra-fitted tops are for you. If you do not want to draw attention to your spare wheel then take advantage of the weather and invest in oversized ponchos to team up with your jeans.

A reader of the column asked me to talk about the casual look for the office. As the world increasingly moves away from the stuffy suit to comfort, many people would like to adopt a casual look without being frumpy, dumpy or inappropriate.

Due to the rise of the T-shirt and jeans culture in some companies during Fridays, especially the software industry, many people have started to question whether the age-old “suit and tie” dress code is even necessary for business wear.

“Dress codes have most certainly relaxed over time, particularly since the introduction of jeans Fridays’ and casual attire,” said Judah Kurtz, of BPI group, and fashion icon.

However, many believe that you should always dress for the job you want, not the one you currently have but how then do we make the casual look work for us?

Never forget that what you wear is representative of your personal image. I suggest that you avoid loud colours, extreme statements like ultra-minis for women and sleeveless tight tees for men. Keep it elegant. Cover up everything that you would cover in formal wear. Go easy on accessories. The gangsta look is definitely a no-no. Casual does not mean sloppy so do not wear your bedroom slippers or your granny’s hand me downs to work please.

According to the Forbes’ article: “Is Casual Dress Killing Your Productivity At Work?” your level of alertness is affected by what you wear. They say that a dress code that defines just what casual means be in place.

A good dress code includes expectations on hygiene, whether perfumes and scents are allowed, any uniform requirements.

Our pick look for this week is the stripped shirt which is unisex.

The stripped shirt can go along with anything and of course the war on causal and formal can be ended if you have one in your closet.

We also have seen a lot of pastors and prophets choosing the stripped shirt and we all know that they have become fashion trendsetters.

Remember clothes don’t make a man but they style a man.

Have a lovely weekend and keep fashion alive.
