FOUR armed men pounced on a Delta Beverages depot in Rusape, blew off three safes and got away with an estimated US$40 000.

The incident occurred on Monday when the suspects cut through the perimeter fence and overpowered three security guards on duty.

Police spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyathi, confirmed the incident.

“Yes, we can confirm that police are handling an armed robbery case where armed robbers attacked the Delta depot in Rusape after subduing security guards and blew the safes,” said Commissioner Nyathi.

“We do not have the actual figures stolen at the moment, but we are investigating this robbery case.”

A source familiar with the investigation revealed that the robbers, wearing balaclavas to conceal their identities, stormed the depot during the dead of night.

They overpowered the security guards, seized their firearms, ordered them to confine a security dog in its kennel, and sprayed their eyes with pepper spray.

After handcuffing the guards and confiscating their cellphones, the robbers force-marched them into the cash office.

Using explosives, they blasted open three safes containing US$40 000, looting all the money before disappearing into the darkness.

One of the security guards eventually freed himself, then his colleagues and reported the incident to Rusape Central Police Station.

No arrests or recoveries have been made so far, and police are appealing to the public for any information or leads that may result in the suspects’ arrest.
