‘Depression almost cost me my life’

GOSPEL star Buhle Nhlangulele says depression almost made her end her life. Nhlangulele, from the group Sinethemba, was in a tell-all mood when speaking to Rebecca Malope last week. She said her depression started six years ago when she fell pregnant.

Speaking to Sowetan Nhlangulele said her world began to crumble when she arrived in Johannesburg, from Msinga in KwaZulu-Natal to pursue her music career. She fell pregnant before marriage and, as a Christian, felt that she had committed the biggest sin.

She explained that she even entertained the thought of aborting the baby.

“I got pregnant at an early stage of my life. I was so scared I had nine months of nightmares and was unable to tell my parents until the baby was born.

“Raising a child as a single mother really frustrated me. Friends and loved ones left me and people called me names.” — Sowetan.
