was just a minor setback.
The Urban Warriors, who are still on top with 59 points, host Maritzburg United in the last league match on May 21 needing a win to lift the Premiership title.
Following the dramatic events on Super Saturday which saw mixed results for the title chasing pack as Sundowns bowed out of contention, while Chiefs bounced back into the picture after derailing Ajax, Orlando Pirates were the big winners.
They snatched a crucial point against Santos which may be very useful in two week’s time.
The Absa Premiership is set for a photo finish but Billiart believes they have done enough already and deserve to be crowned champions when they play Maritzburg who spoiled the party for Ian Gorowa’s Sundowns at the weekend.
Speaking from his base in Cape Town yesterday, Billiart said the defeat has hardly dampened the team’s spirit.
“We were not prepared mentally for the job and playing away complicated things for us. They were just too good for us. But the good thing is we are still on top. We will finish the job on the last day.
Everyone in the team believes it can be done and we have to do it,” said Billiart.
The attacking midfielder revealed that their outgoing coach Foppe de Haan was not worried by the defeat at Peter Mokaba and told his lads in the dressing room that it was still game on.
“The coach was not moved at all with the defeat after the game. He told us there is no need to feel sorry and demoralised. The destiny is still in our hands and we just need to remain focused. So we are not low and we are looking forward to the match. We know what we are capable of doing especially at home and we just believe we will beat Maritzburg United at home. We have been doing it and will not let pressure affect us in the last match,” said Billiart.
The youthful side has lost once at home to Sundowns in the second half of the season and has been the league’s consistent performers.
However, many neutrals believe the team, which consists of young players short on experience, will choke where it matters most like what happened on Saturday.
While Zimbabwean flair is still involved in the league race, the interest is also in the Lesley Manyathela Golden Goot award where Knowledge Musona edged closer to success story. The Warriors striker took his tally to 14 goals when he scored one of the four goals against Ajax Cape Town. He is leading the charts by a single goal ahead of Sundowns’ forward Katlego Mphela and Amazulu’s Lehlohonolo Majoro who are on 13 goals.
Yesterday Billiart – Musona’s former teammate at the Warriors and Aces Youth Academy – rallied behind his countryman to win the coveted award.
“I want Knowledge to win the award and I believe he can do it. He has done well this season. He scored against us and I believe he can score again and win the award.
“I know what he is capable of,” said Billiart.
Kaizer Chiefs defender Thomas Sweswe also rallied behind Musona for the Golden Boot.
“We are going to Amazulu with a winning mentality because anything can happen to Pirates and Ajax. It is still game on. We are also looking forward to our boy increasing his tally. We will support him on the field of play and hope he scores at least two goals”, said Sweswe.
Though Musona is on course to win the award in his second season in the Premiership, fellow Warriors striker Nyasha Mushekwi has been the real deal this season.
He has managed 11 league goals so far in a season where he had to contend with coming from the bench in a star studded Sundowns team.
