Detectives escorted bus from Masvingo to Harare to arrest drug peddler

A team of detectives over the weekend intercepted a cross-border bus in Masvingo before escorting it to Harare to arrest a suspected drug peddler.

The incident occurred on Saturday after the detectives received information that the bus was carrying a consignment of drugs enroute to Harare.

A search led to the recovery of 100 bottles of Broncleer cough syrup commonly known as bronco.

National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the arrest of the suspect, Peter Zambara (40) at High Glen long distance bus termini.

“On January 3, 2026, detectives from CID Drugs and Narcotics Unit, Masvingo, acted on a tip-off and intercepted a cross-border bus in Masvingo,” he said.

“A search was conducted on the bus leading to the recovery of two bags containing 300 x 100 ml bottles of Broncleer cough syrup.

“The bus was escorted to Highglen, Harare, where Peter Zambara aged 40 was arrested after receiving the illicit consignment.”

Meanwhile, on the same day, police in Chivhu arrested Learnmore Nyagumbo (33), Makuwere James Nyagumbo (31) and Remember Courage Chenzara (20) for unlawful cultivation of mbanje at Plot 24, Vergnoek, in Featherstone.

Police recovered several mbanje plants from the suspects’ garden.

  1. The bus was used to commit a criminal offence and therefore must be impounded, the same way a gun or vehicle is impounded when used for committing a robbery.
