The Muzarabani Rural District council has completed the construction of classroom blocks at Batanai and Gumbochuma primary schools that were destroyed by hailstorm last season.
Council chipped in to assist efforts by the local people after the blocks were laid to waste by hailstorm before completion.
The district information officer Mr Godfrey Chireru said the council, using devolution funds, took over the project and re-designed it taking into consideration the disaster risk reduction components.
“Part of Muzarabani district is in the Zambezi valley which is usually prone to flooding, storms and strong winds. Following the hailstorms, a number of learners were left without shelter making it almost impossible for normal learning and teaching to take place.

“Council, through the devolution funds took over the rehabilitation of the classroom blocks at Batanai and Gumbochuma schools. The Muzarabani Rural District Council re-designed the block taking into consideration disaster risk reduction components” he said.
These components include structural steel roof and reinforced concrete beams.
Meanwhile, district Engineer Blessing Mutusva said it is now mandatory for all public structures in Lower Muzarabani to embrace disaster risk reduction components.
“The Department of Engineering will make sure that all structures in lower Muzarabani embrace these components in order to prevent destruction of the structures and loss life,” said Eng Mutusva.
