A Cursory look at social media and other platforms shows that some people misunderstand the distinction between the Zanu PF National People’s Conference with the party Congress.
The Zanu PF National People’s Conference is different from the congress.
The conference is held every year, whilst the congress takes place every five years. The congress, as per the party Constitution, is the highest decision-making organ within the Zanu PF party, while the conference, on the other hand, is for the purposes of receiving the Central Committee report for that particular year, checking the implementation of resolutions, as well as coming up with new resolutions for Government to implement and performing any other functions as articulated by Section 34 of the party constitution.
The Zanu PF Conference is not elective, as opposed to the congress which elects the entire membership of the Politburo. The last Zanu PF Congress was held in 2022, with the next one set for 2027.
At the 2022 congress, President Mnangagwa was elected to serve as the party’s First Secretary and President for a five-year term.
