IN a powerful address on 25 October, marking Sadc Anti-Sanctions Day, Dr Emmerson Mnangagwa, President of Zimbabwe and Chairperson of the Southern African Development Community (Sadc), called for the immediate and unconditional removal of illegal sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe.

His remarks highlighted the profound impact these measures have on ordinary Zimbabweans and the broader region.

“Today marks a historic occasion,” President Mnangagwa said, emphasising the solidarity of Sadc member states with Zimbabwe.

He noted the significant progress made since the 40th Sadc Summit designated October 25 as a day to raise awareness about the detrimental effects of sanctions. “The Summit decision added impetus to our collective resolve to fight against these illegal measures, which violate the basic human rights of ordinary Zimbabweans.”

President Mnangagwa condemned the sanctions as “heinous and inhumane measures,” stressing that it is primarily the vulnerable populations who suffer the most.

“It is the ordinary people, particularly the vulnerable, who bear the brunt of these sanctions, which also stifle economic and social progress in Zimbabwe,” he said.

In his address, the President echoed the sentiments of previous Sadc Chairpersons and regional leaders, calling for unified action.

“In solidarity, the Sadc community joins Zimbabwe in calling for the immediate and unconditional removal of these unwarranted and cruel sanctions, which violate the basic tenets of international law and the Charter of the United Nations,” he said.

President Mnangagwa further emphasised the importance of regional peace and stability.

“Our region enjoys relative peace and stability and continues to work towards achieving a prosperous and integrated region,” he said.

The President urged the international community to recognise the harm inflicted by the sanctions, imploring; “May this message transcend our borders and reach the ears and rattle the conscience of those perpetuating these cruel sanctions.”

The President concluded by appealing to progressive nations to support Zimbabwe’s efforts towards socio-economic development.

“I implore all progressive countries to continue rendering their principled support, to enable Zimbabwe and the Sadc region to meaningfully contribute to the socio-economic development of the region and the world.”

As Sadc member states stand united in their call for the lifting of sanctions, President Mnangagwa’s address underscores the ongoing struggles faced by Zimbabweans and the collective aspiration for a prosperous future free from economic restrictions.
