Digital rights essential: POTRAZ

PLAYERS in the telecoms sector engaged Chiredzi residents to raise awareness about digital rights in a bid to create an enabling environment.

The campaign, courtesy of Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ), is exploring an enabling environment that could only be created if the consumer is protected.

In a speech read on his behalf by head industry and consumer affairs, Vengesai Magadzire, POTRAZ director general, Gift Machengete, said they are pushing to protect consumers.

“This strengthens our collaborative efforts with our partners, the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ), Consumer Council of Zimbabwe (CCZ), Consumer Protection Commission (CPC) and the Central Investigations Department (CID).

“We also achieve this through the use of voluntary solutions, business and consumer education and using economic assessments and customer satisfaction surveys. This takes us to a sharper type of decision-making and a deeper level of problem analysis.

“It is my hope that discussions have increased consumer awareness on cross cutting matters as well as further strengthen our collaborative efforts as we focus on creating a system that tackles consumer problems.

“This will ensure taking a broad perspective as possible, and creating the ability to identify serious and harmful market problems through cooperation as sister regulators,” he said.

He said working together through collaboration allows for effective protection of consumer rights.

“This workshop in Chiredzi is the fourth of this kind following similar engagements in Binga, Zezani and Chipinge,” he said.
