ZIMBABWE this week proudly flew its tourism flag high at the just-ended Africa Travel Indaba 2026, in Durban, South Africa, where the country was showcasing its vast tourism potential before the global travel industry.
Running from May 11 to 14, 2026, the prestigious continental tourism showcase was an important platform for promoting Destination Zimbabwe, with the Eastern Highlands and Manicaland taking centre stage as some of the country’s most breath-taking travel destinations.
This year’s Indaba attracted 999 buyers from 44 countries, 1 225 exhibitors and 18 airlines, creating a dynamic marketplace for African tourism.
Zimbabwe’s delegation of 44 tourism operators used the platform to strengthen regional tourism cooperation, attract investment and secure new business opportunities that will help grow the country’s tourism sector.
The showcase also provided Zimbabwe with a rare opportunity to place the beauty of its landscapes, culture and hospitality before international buyers searching for authentic African travel experiences.
Tourism and Hospitality Industry Deputy Minister, Honourable Tongai Mafidi Mnangagwa joined fellow African ministers and deputies at the Ministers Dinner hosted by South Africa’s Tourism Minister Patricia de Lille, highlighting Zimbabwe’s determination to remain competitive in Africa’s growing tourism market.
The gathering also reinforced the importance of regional partnerships in promoting African destinations to the world.
While destinations such as Victoria Falls, Hwange National Park and Great Zimbabwe continue to enjoy global recognition, the Eastern Highlands are increasingly becoming one of Zimbabwe’s most treasured tourism jewels. Stretching across Manicaland, the region offers visitors a magical blend of towering mountains, rolling valleys, waterfalls, forests and peaceful countryside that leaves lasting memories on all who visit.
In the heart of Nyanga stands the majestic Nyanga Mountain, the highest peak in Zimbabwe, rising 2 593 metres above sea level. The mountain has become a symbol of adventure and tranquillity for travellers seeking both excitement and reflection. The hike to the summit takes about three to four hours, and rewards visitors with sweeping panoramic views of the Eastern Highlands. As clouds drift slowly beneath the mountaintop and the cool mountain air settles across the valleys, visitors experience a sense of peace that is difficult to find elsewhere.
Not far from the mountain lies the spectacular Mutarazi Falls, the highest waterfall in Zimbabwe, and the second highest in Africa at 762 metres.
The thunder of falling water echoes through the escarpment as mist rises into the surrounding forests. For thrill seekers, the famous skywalk offers an unforgettable experience high above the valleys below. Standing suspended above the gorge, visitors are treated to dramatic views of mountains, cliffs and endless wilderness stretching deep into the horizon.
Nyanga’s beauty continues at World’s View, one of the most scenic viewpoints in the country.
On a clear day, travellers can see uninterrupted vistas extending across the Honde Valley and beyond. The landscape unfolds like a painting, with rolling hills and scattered villages blending naturally into the green countryside. Nearby, the soothing sounds of Nyangombe Falls offer another unforgettable encounter with nature. The picturesque waterfall flows gracefully over layered rocks into refreshing pools surrounded by dense vegetation, making it one of the most peaceful attractions in the region.
A short drive from Mutare leads visitors into the mist covered Vumba Mountains, often described as one of Zimbabwe’s most romantic destinations. Wrapped in cool mountain air and evergreen forests, the Vumba landscape has frequently been compared to the Scottish Highlands because of its rolling hills, misty atmosphere and breathtaking scenery.
At the Vumba Botanical Gardens, colourful flowers bloom throughout tranquil walking trails lined with exotic plants, azaleas and hydrangeas.
Quiet dams reflect the surrounding greenery while birds sing softly from the forests above, creating an atmosphere of complete serenity. The gardens remain a favourite destination for couples, families and travellers seeking rest away from busy city life.
Luxury tourism also finds a home in cosy accommodation sites such as the internationally recognised White Horse Inn as well as the Vumba at Leopard Rock, famous for its championship golf course and stunning views across valleys and granite peaks. Visitors from around the world continue to enjoy the calm elegance of the resort while taking in some of the finest mountain scenery in Southern Africa.
Hidden within the mountains is the beloved Tony’s Coffee Shop, a legendary stop that has become part of the Eastern Highlands travel experience. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee drifts through the cool mountain air while homemade cakes and warm hospitality welcome travellers from every corner of the world. Many visitors leave with memories, not only of the food and coffee, but of the peaceful atmosphere that defines the Vumba experience.
Further south lies the rugged wilderness of Chimanimani, a destination that continues to attract adventurers, hikers and nature lovers seeking untouched beauty. The region is known for its dramatic mountains, deep valleys, crystal clear rivers and rare plant life that thrive within its remote landscapes.
Among Chimanimani’s most admired attractions is Bridal Veil Falls, where water cascades delicately into a crystal clear pool surrounded by indigenous forests. The gentle beauty of the waterfall creates an atmosphere of calm and wonder for visitors exploring the region.
Nearby, Tessa’s Pools offer refreshing natural rock pools that provide relief for hikers after long treks through the mountains. The pools have become a favourite resting point for travellers exploring the magnificent Chimanimani Mountains, where white quartz peaks rise dramatically above the wilderness. Hidden caves, rare flora and breath-taking scenery continue to make Chimanimani one of Africa’s most extraordinary mountain destinations.
As Zimbabwe continues to market its tourism potential at the Africa Travel Indaba, Manicaland stands ready to welcome the world with its unmatched natural beauty, warm hospitality and unforgettable travel experiences.
Through platforms such as the Indaba, Zimbabwe is not only promoting its tourism industry but also sharing the beauty of its people, landscapes and heritage with the global community.
