YOU can call it DIVINE intervention!
Warriors star DIVINE LUNGA is lucky to be alive after his BMW was shot at by a suspected gang of armed robbers in Johannesburg on Sunday.
The windscreen of the BMW shows that a number of bullets hit the car, which the Mamelodi Sundowns defender was driving, in what is being reported to have been a Good Samaritan mission.
Police in South Africa are now investigating an attempted murder case related to the incident.
Lunga was in the company of friends when they decided to pursue a car of criminals who are said to have robbed a man of R34,000.
During the chase of the vehicle, which was carrying the suspected robbers, shots were fired at Lunga’s blue BMW.
Luckily, no one was injured.
Police say Lunga was driving his BMW along Tudhope Street when they were stopped by a man who claimed he had been robbed of his R34,000.
Reports from South Africa say the man, who was reported, believed that Lunga and his colleagues were undercover police officers.
He told them that he had been robbed and pointed to the occupants of a car, which was speeding away, as the people who had robbed him.
“Acting with the intention of assisting the African male, Lunga and his friends decided to follow the suspected vehicle.
“During the pursuit, one of the occupants of the suspected vehicle allegedly fired shots towards Lunga’s vehicle.
“One of the bullets struck the BMW, leaving a bullet hole. Fortunately, no injuries were sustained,” the police statement read.
No arrests have been made at this stage, and police investigations are continuing.
Lunga is not the first Zimbabwean football star to find himself trapped in such a scary situation where there is a thin line between life and death.
KHAMA BILLIAT, FEBRUARY 2020
Warriors star, Khama Billiat, was robbed at gunpoint in South Africa, for the second time inside three years, and lost some valuables at a mall in Johannesburg.
The incident happened on a Thursday evening.
The football star was unharmed but was left traumatised by the scary event.
According to reports, Billiat lost cash, phones and jewellery to the armed thugs.
Close friends confirmed the Zimbabwe forward was unharmed but was “definitely left in a state of shock”.
“From what I hear, it all happened very fast. The good thing is they didn’t harm him although they managed to get away with some valuables,” said one of his close acquaintances.
This was not the first time that Billiat has had a close shave with armed robberies.
The Aces Youth Academy alumni suffered a similar trauma in February 2017, when he was robbed by six men armed with AK47s at an Engen garage in Kyalami.
Billiat was the highest paid player in the South African Premiership when he was attacked.
He was said to have been buying pre-paid electricity at the time and had his watch and wallet taken during the incident.
He escaped unharmed after the gunmen forcibly extracted money from an ATM.
He was unhurt in the terrifying incident although he was left to battle the psychological trauma of coming face-to-face with the agents of crime who have turned South Africa into one of the most dangerous countries in the world.
CHARLES YOHANE,
FEBRUARY 12, 2022
Former Warriors star Charles Yohane was shot dead in South Africa by carjackers.
He was 48 years old.
He featured in the Warriors squad for 2004 AFCON and last coached the Bidvest Wits developmental side before the club was sold.
Yohane was found dead in Mzimhlophe, Soweto, after he was hijacked at the weekend.
He played for Amazulu and Bidvest Wits between 1996 and 2006.
He had been working as a driver on the Bolt e-hailing platform at the time of his death.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Mavela Masondo said that police were called to the scene by a member of the public after they noticed someone lying on the pavement on the Soweto Highway in Meadowlands.
“On arrival, police found a man with gunshot wounds on his upper body. He was certified dead by paramedics.
“The motive for the killing is unknown. A case of murder was opened for further investigation,” said Masondo.
Gareth Taylor, Bolt’s SADC regional manager, said that Yohane had completed a trip on the evening of his death.
“Bolt is disheartened by this heinous and senseless act, and unequivocally condemns any violence of any form directed towards e-hailing drivers because it believes that every South African has the right to earn a living and move around without risk of harm, intimidation or coercion, or fear of death or injury.
“Bolt is deeply saddened by the passing of Charles Yohane. We are fully cooperating with the police in the investigation of this case and we urge anyone with information about this incident to share it with the police.” – H-Metro Reporter/Agencies
