ZIFA Manicaland Division Two soccer League will this weekend roar into life after a two-week sabbatical with eight games scheduled to be played.
The race for promotion into the more fashionable Division One league is hotting up with heavyweights, Midway feeling the heat and under pressure to remain on the log apex against perennial opponents, The Africa Trust and Redwing Mine who are seated on second and third positions respectively.
In their last match, Midway lost two crucial points after they drew one-all with Sisal Stars at home, while Redwing Mine salvaged to a two-all draw against stubborn Eastern Highlands.
The result saw Midway retaining pole position with 39 points in 18 matches, while TAT and Redwing Mine are both tied at 37 points.
TAT has a realistic chance to storm to the top of the table if they beat Nhedziwa since they have a game in hand.
Claremont were the biggest winners in their last match after they clobbered Chikobvore 3 – 1. The win saw the Nyanga-based team climbing to fourth position with 29 points, while Chikobvore sunk deeper into the murky waters of relegation, being third from bottom and having 10 points in 18 matches.
In an interview, the league fixtures secretary, Kundai Makwarise, said ZRP Mutare outfit who announced that they were throwing in the towel two months bounced back and drew 2 – 2 with Chiwere.
“Although they are financially struggling they have the passion for the sport and they are back in the league. We hope they will fulfill their remaining fixtures since they are lagging behind. Like any other team in the league, they are struggling to make ends meet, but we appreciate their verve and passion for soccer. The league is progressing well and we are witnessing a high level of competition,” he said.
The law enforcers will this weekend face Chikobvore.
In other fixtures scheduled for this weekend, TAT will host Nhedziwa, while Eastern Highlands will lock horns with Sisal Stars.
Log leaders, Midway will travel to Claremont in a potential thriller, while Chiwere will play host to Redwing Mine.
