IT’S the end of the road for Arda Transau-based ZIFA Manicaland Division Two Soccer League outfit, AK 47 who last week threw in the towel and withdrew from the league owing to financial constraints.The well pronounced financial challenges bedevilling football at the highest level have not spared teams even in the lower leagues of the game.
Although efforts to contact an AK 47 FC official proved fruitless by the time The Weekender Sport went to bed on Tuesday evening, the league secretary, Kundai Makwarise, confirmed the development.
He said the team cited viability reasons.
“One of the club officials called me saying they could not continue playing in the league since they were not winning.
He said there was no reason for forking out money to fulfil fixtures among other expenses without bagging maximum points on matches.
It is a blow to us but there is nothing we can do,” he said.
In Week Six, AK 47 could not fulfill their fixture against ZRP Mutare. There were also scheduled to meet Claremont this weekend.
“This brings some headache to us since this will affect the fixtures and other logistics. But any team willing to join the league as a replacement is welcome,” added Makwarise.
Meanwhile, in matches played last weekend, Redwing Mine maintained their pole position after they drew one-all with second placed The Africa Trust.
The miners now have 14 points in six matches while The Africa Trust are a point behind.
Chibvore Stars upstaged Sisal Stars 3 -1 at home, while Eastern Highlands lost by a goal to Midway. Chiwere United and Nhedziwa United drew 2 – 2, while Watermark beat Claremont 2-0.
