Harare-based wheel-spinner Joseph Ngonidzaishe Isaac, popularly known as “DJ Joe,” has hailed his victory in the second edition of the Carling Black Label (CBL) DJ Clash as the beginning of bigger opportunities in his career.

The competition held last year showcased Zimbabwe’s vibrant DJ scene. It brought together 25 finalists who had been selected after an extensive nationwide search spanning eight regions and reviewing over 350 mixtapes.

The national finals held in Harare in December saw inaugural champion DJ Irvene X eager to defend his title. However, DJ Joe, a regular on radio station, ZiFM Stereo, outshone the competition to claim the ultimate prize, walking away with US$3 000, a DJ controller, an Apple MacBook, studio monitors and a cordless microphone.

Speaking to Chronicle Showbiz, DJ Joe reflected on his journey spanning over a decade, highlighting how perseverance has finally paid off.

“I started DJing in 2012, but I only went professional around 2017. I was inspired by the way DJs performed in clubs and on radio, how they controlled the crowd and took people on a musical journey.

“I was particularly fascinated by how they seamlessly transitioned between songs, and I decided to learn that craft. DJs who inspired me include SD, Reverb 7 and DJ Storm, among other greats,” said DJ Joe.

Looking ahead, DJ Joe who plays at various entertainment spots across the country, has his sights set on securing international gigs and expanding the deejaying industry in Zimbabwe.

“My dream is to perform on global stages like DJ Jazzy Jeff, Nitefreak and Black Coffee. I also aspire to establish a DJ academy and a record label.

“I want to change the perception of DJing in Zimbabwe – from being seen as just a side hustle to a sustainable career,” he revealed.

On winning the coveted title, DJ Joe who has not released any project yet, described it as a long-awaited achievement.

“Winning the Carling Black Label DJ Clash 2024 was a dream come true. Years of hard work and perfecting my skills have finally paid off at a national level.

“My next goal is to release my own work and build my brand, not just in Zimbabwe but beyond its borders. I’d like to thank the Almighty, my family and friends for their support, as well as Carling Black Label for giving us DJs a platform to showcase our skills to the world,” said DJ Joe.—@mthabisi_mthire
