DJ SBU could find himself in trouble for disobeying the rules of the Metro FM Music Awards over the weekend.
On Saturday night at the Durban ICC, the charismatic Metro FM DJ and businessman unleashed an ambush marketing strategy by promoting his energy drink Mo-Faya off and on stage while presenting with talk show host Khanyi Mbau.
He even urged the audience to call and respond to Mo-Faya.
This was in contravention of a guest presenter’s brief that was sent out on the eve of the awards.
Item 9 on the brief states in bold: “Please note that you are not allowed to do any form of product placement. No branded T-shirts/caps are permitted to be worn on stage when you present an award.”
Metro FM PR and communications manager Happy Ngidi said there would be consequences.
“The brief was sent to the presenters and this incident will be discussed. As far as I know nobody who received the brief came back to arrange that they step outside it. In any corporate environment there are rules and instructions set and you have to honour them.”
Ngidi added that the seriousness of the offence will be determined “after the discussions have taken place”.
DJ Sbu could not be reached for comment as his cellphone was on voicemail.
On social media he posted his picture holding a can of the beverage with the hashtag #YouCantStopMyGo and #FostingIsAllIKnow and the message “I have kids to educate, jobs to create and history to make”.
In another incident behind the scenes, crooner Brian Temba had to hunt down a suspected thief who made off with his clothes while he was waiting to perform his hit song Dominoes in tribute to the late DJ Eddie Zondi.
Temba said he noticed a suspicious-looking man in the change rooms who later disappeared with his clothes and he had to chase him down until he found him at the after-party.
After a confrontation, the man handed back his clothes that were already in the man’s car.
Ngidi said they were not aware of the incident and condemned it.
“After the incident two years ago of the theft at the hotel we stayed in, we wouldn’t want to go through that nightmare again, we are sorry that Brian experienced that,” she said.
The night belonged to Mahikeng rapper Cassper Nyovest, who took home five silvers including the hotly contested Best Hip-Hop award.
Some of the highlights from the lacklustre award ceremony included Zondi’s tribute, Nyovest’s closing performance and Lifetime Achievement honours to veterans Mahotella Queens and Tsepo Tshola.
Technical issues such as sound, cringeworthy presenters who ignored the script, and uninspiring performances dogged the night meant to showcase the best in local music hosted by TV’s Minnie Dlamini and DJ Tbo Touch. – Sowetan.
