South Africa-based Zimbabwean disc jockey Score is set to perform at the Chris Brown Show in South Africa this April.
The show will see international award winning singer August Alsina sharing the stage with the “Loyal” hitmaker as well as other South African renowned DJs.
DJ Score, whose real name is Sydney Matope, is in the country for a week during which he said he was excited to be on the same bill with Breezy.
“I love playing to a huge crowd. This is a lifetime opportunity for me, showcasing alongside top international acts. I have toured Europe and this is not my first time performing alongside gurus in the music industry. I have also worked with Jah Rule’s DJ Envy, DJ Drama, AKA, Casper Nyovest, Da Les and Big Nuz among others,” he said.
He said he was inspired by renowned radio DJs Peter Johns and Otis Fraser.
“Growing up, I wanted to be a radio DJ as I used to listen to Otis and Peter Johns. When I am on the turntables, I feel like I can control the world. DJ Clue, DJ Premiere and DJ Jazzy Jeff inspire me to be better. I have been performing for the past four years in different clubs,” he said.
DJ Score, who has been living in South Africa for the past 15 years, said he has lost touch with local music and is back home to touch base with the trending beats.
“There are a few artistes I know in Zimbabwe. I am here because I want to learn more on what’s trending in Zimbabwe, especially the Zim dancehall,” he said.
He said Zimbabwean DJs were talented but lacked the exposure and resources.
“I want to introduce veejaying in Zimbabwean clubs which is proper club material. It involves juggling on CDs via serato not virtual DJ, common among local DJs. Imagine all they have are laptops but no headphones,” he said.
Apart from being a DJ, Score is also a musician.
“I am releasing a single featuring Da Les and Casper Nyovest titled ‘Good To Go’ next month. Music has been my passion and I want to breakthrough with a single,” he said.
He is set to tour the United Kingdom in March with Stoan and Speedy of the Bongo Maffin fame.
DJ Score is also a video jockey on SABC1 on the “After Party” session.
