A GRUESOME discovery was made in Domborembizi Village on the outskirts of Rusape, when a dog was found mauling a human skull.
As news of the incident spread, the local leadership, police and Criminal Investigations Department (CID) homicide unit were swiftly alerted, and a thorough investigation was launched in the nearby thicket, leading to the discovery of other body parts that were in an advanced state of decomposition.
Acting Manicaland provincial police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka confirmed the gory incident, and said the skull belonged to Milton Makondo (73), who had gone missing weeks prior.
Assistant Inspector Chinyoka said further investigations led to the discovery of clothing that was positively identified as belonging to Makondo.
He said the police searched the area, but failed to find any additional evidence that might shed light on the circumstances surrounding Makondo’s death.
While he said investigation continues, the Domborembizi community remains on the edge, seeking answers to the many questions that surround this tragic event, including concerns about the safety and security of the area.
“On January 14, 2025, Milton Makondo was last seen by his son, Pearson Makondo (38), of Village 51, Nemaire, on the outskirts of Rusape, while staying alone at his house. On February 3, 2025, around 9am, Kudakwashe Majarira (32), of Village 32, Domborembizi, discovered a human skull that was being mauled by her dog at her homestead. She summoned local leaders and villagers, including Pearson, who immediately identified the skull as his missing father’s. Pearson reported the incident to Rusape Rural Police Station, whose officers, along with CID homicide details, attended the scene,” said Assistant Inspector Chinyoka.
He said a search of the nearby bush led to the discovery of human remains in an advanced state of decomposition, as well as clothing which Pearson positively identified as belonging to his late father.
Assistant Inspector Chinyoka said there were no visible signs of struggle at the scene, and the remains were taken to Rusape General Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
“The police and community searched the nearby bush leading to the discovery of human remains that were in an advanced state of decomposition as well as the deceased’s clothes. The deceased’s son positively identified the clothes as belonging to Milton. There were no visible struggle marks at the scene. The police collected the remains, which were taken to Rusape General Hospital for a post-mortem,” said Assistant Inspector Chinyoka, adding that they are working tirelessly to piece together the events leading up to the man’s death.
