Dominican convent leave for World schools chess champs

DOMINICAN Convent High Harare chess team have left the country for the World Schools Chess Championship scheduled for Washington DC in the United States.

The team is confident they will do well on this tour of duty.

The eight-member team was seen off at a send-off ceremony yesterday.

Zimbabwe Chess Federation president, Todd Mapingire, who is the head of delegation, said they will use the tour to learn.

“As we embark on this journey to America, we are filled with excitement and anticipation.

“We are confident that our team will showcase their skills and make a mark on the global stage.

“We are grateful to the sponsors and supporters who made this a possibility as your contributions will have a lasting impact on the lives of these young chess players.

“I am also grateful to FIDE for their continued support and guidance in promoting chess globally,” said Mapingire.

NMB Bank came on board and supported the team financially which was instrumental in enabling them to participate in this prestigious event.

NMB Bank branch and business development manager, Faustina Marowa, said they are hopeful that the team will do well.

“At NMB Bank, we believe in investing in the future and that future lies in the brilliance, discipline and determination of our youth.

“Chess is more than a game; it teaches strategy, patience, and resilience, qualities that build leaders.

“By supporting this team, we are not just sponsoring a trip, we are nurturing excellence.

“We are delighted to officially hand over a cheque of US$5 000 to support the team’s travel and participation.

“We hope this contribution helps ease the journey and allows the players to focus on what they do best  – making smart moves and making us proud,” said Marowa.
