Richard Matimba, a music teacher at the school, was ecstatic about the album describing it as one of the effective mediums in preserving Zimbabwean culture.
“It’s very encouraging to see youngsters developing a keen interest in traditional instruments and we are hoping the album will come out in the manner we have planned,” said Matimba.
The as-of-yet-titled album is now at the mastering stage and would be released soon. “We are currently editing some of the songs and it will be out early next year. We are also waiting for Tuku to put some lyrics on one of the songs,” said Matimba. Tuku will work on a song that looks at child and gender issues.
Formed in 2009, Dominican Convent Marimba Club has so far won two trophies.
Twenty-eight pupils took part in the musical project.
Matimba, popularly known as Uncle Richie, is a gospel recording artiste.
In 2011, he released his debut album titled “Tinosvika Chete”.
The album carries the hit song “Mweya Mutsvene”, which is currently receiving good airplay on national radio stations. “I love music and that is why the Marimba Club has excelled to such great heights. When I was training as a teacher at Mutare Teachers’ College, I specialised in music and I am currently with the Zimbabwe College of Music where I am doing a degree programme in musicology,” he said.
