Several pieces of artworks were auctioned during the well-attended event that saw several organisations and individuals pledging different amounts of money towards the National Gallery.
Guest of honour Dr Solomon Guramatunhu, an art enthusiast, who boasts a massive art collection stemming from his visits to different galleries across the globe, pledged to give the national gallery US$5 000 each year.
“Whenever I travel, I am reminded of how well endowed Zimbabwe is with passionate and talented artists when I come across artworks from Zimbabwe.
“These artists have put us on the global map, and they have been working hard to lure tourists back to the country with some of their artworks that speak volumes of Zimbabwean hospitality.
“I therefore urge you to assist the activities of the National Gallery so that we can preserve the artworks for generations to come,” he said.
Earlier on, National Gallery of Zimbabwe director Mrs Doreen Sibanda appealed to well-wishers to assist the gallery with money to rehabilitate its buildings, which were old.
“We need to upgrade our buildings that have seen their better days and now want to be replaced. We are, however, grateful to several corporate organisations and individuals who have promised to assist us during this period,” she said.
Jazz crooner Prudence Katomeni- Mbofana entertained the audience with her soulful ballads, while diners tucked in their food.
A soulful singer blessed with good voice intonation, Prudence played a number of renditions, which she mixed with her own delightful collection.
One of her songs, “Woza”, was well delivered and received a rapturous applause from the audience.
Some of the people who attended the dinner include the Minister of Education, Sport, Arts and Culture, David Coltart; Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet Misheck Sibanda and several captains of industry.
