DEBUTANTS Dongo Sawmill ended a three-game losing streak and picked up their second point of the season with a workaholic performance that nearly stunned the home side in a Castle Lager Premier Soccer League tie at Gwanzura yesterday.

The visitors, who got their season off to a fine start with a 2-all draw against FC Platinum before losing to Triangle, Dynamos and How Mine, raced into a sixth-minute lead when Martin Nyanzira coolly beat a badly exposed Wilson Muchenje in goals for ZPC Kariba.

The goal stung the home side into action as they started pouring forward in search of an equaliser which duly came on 24 minutes.

Artwell Nyamiwa headed home Dexter Phiri’s fine cross.

The equaliser did not deter Dongo who showed no respect for last season’s second best team.

However, poor finishing and some good saves from Muchenje denied them a maiden Premiership triumph.

ZPC Kariba stand-in coach Godfrey Tamirepi said he was happy with the way his charges acquitted themselves.

“I am happy with the way we controlled the game and the chances we created although we would have loved to win this game,” said Tamirepi, who stood in for head coach Saul Chaminuka, who is away in Cameroon with the Young Warriors.

Dongo mentor Shadreck Mugurasave believes his youngsters are growing with each outing and will successfully fight against relegation.

“It was a fair result,” he said.

“The losses we suffered were beginning to worry us so we are happy with the point we got today. We have a young team that is growing with each game.”
