GREAT Minds of Women CEO, Vimbai Maitere, says children born out of wedlock have rights and should not be abused.
She says videos circulating on social media showing women viciously assaulting such children are disturbing and heartbreaking.
Maitere was addressing women from various church denominations at Mubaiwa Hotel in Chitungwiza.
“We have gathered women to meet various speakers drawn from legal, health, law enforcement and chaplains to address their issues,” she said.
“We have children born out of wedlock and women need to understand their rights and avoid violating them.”
She said some changes to the Marriages Act need to be explained to many women across the country.
“Very few spouses are aware of the changes to the Marriage Acts like Chapter 37, 5:11 which is now 5:17.
“Some are being fooled about these changes and think that their marriage certificates have expired, there is more information women need to know.
“Some of the facts include how to handle cases where men are after widows and single women’s property.
“Our organisation is set to take the message across the nation. We have been engaging various church leaders to allow us take our teachings to people at their traditional gatherings like Passover or Easter conferences, as well as women’s conferences.”
Among the speakers at the prayer meeting were Tadiwa Mangwende, a University of Zimbabwe medical student, Needmore Mutambara, an ex-police chaplain and Victim Friendly Unit officer, Nomatter Masomera, a health worker, Josephine Jaravaza, from an estate agency and Joyce Masomere, from a law firm.
