As part of its 30th anniversary celebrations, Africa’s most decorated gospel ensemble, Joyous Celebration, has embarked on a series of city-to-city performances across South Africa as it seeks to reconnect with its fans.
To mark the milestone, the group recently took to social media, inviting fans to suggest former members who should be included in the celebrations, as well as cities and countries they would like the ensemble to visit.
Among the alumni names suggested by fans are Ayanda Shange, Sebata Masoka, Given Mabena, Sphumelele Mbambo, Puleng March, Ntokozo Mbambo and Xolile Mncwango.
A Facebook user identified as Badelia Mutsila commented that Joyous Celebration should “bring back everyone who was part of Joyous 15 to 19.”
Those editions featured several Zimbabwean gospel stars, including United Kingdom-based artiste Mkhululi Bhebhe, Kuregerera In Advance hitmaker Takesure Zamar Ncube, and the late Eric Moyo.
Another fan, Jabulani Nkiwane, urged the group to include Bulawayo on its anniversary tour.
“Joyous Celebration must bring its 30 Years Celebration Tour to Bulawayo. We connect deeply with your music, and the group has given us songs that have become part of our lives over the years,” he said.
While the group’s leadership is yet to announce additional tour dates, fans in Zimbabwe remain hopeful that the City of Kings will be considered, given its significant contribution of talent to the ensemble over the years.
Joyous Celebration was founded in 1994 by Jabu Hlongwane, Mthunzi Namba and Lindelani Mkhize. The project was conceived during South Africa’s transition to democracy, with the founders aiming to create a musical celebration of the country’s peaceful political transformation.
What began as a once-off project later evolved into a permanent gospel ensemble, which released its debut album in 1997.
Over the years, Joyous Celebration has become one of Africa’s most celebrated gospel groups, earning more than 50 continental accolades.
The ensemble has won over 15 South African Music Awards (SAMAs), including Best Contemporary Gospel Album, Best African Contemporary Gospel Album, Best Selling DVD, Best Selling Album, and Best Selling Digital Artist of the Year.
These awards were received across different years, cementing the group’s legacy as one of the continent’s most influential gospel acts.
