mixing of classical and contemporary music in such a way as to hardly draw the audience’s attention to the supposed dichotomy of the two.
Such mixing of musical genres is hardly new on the world stage.
In fact, it has become a wildly successful commercial enterprise on the festival and concert circuits. One such runaway success coming to Hifa is the wildly successful South African show of top international quality, A Handful of Keys, which has been performed over 1 000 times, to over 300 000 people on three continents!
Directed and created by Ian von Memerty with Roelof Colyn and Jonathan Roxmouth on two grand pianos, the show which will be presented by Land Rover, gives a dazzling display of pianistic virtuosity and hilarious impersonation.
The two play their way through, among others, the great classic masters Bach and Beethoven through to the soul swingers Ray Charles and Fats Waller and finally onto pop superstars Elton John, Freddie Mercury and Liberace, Billy Joel and many more.
“A Handful of Keys” began in 1994 with Von Memerty and Brian Schimel and toured for three years. It has been revived over and over again, by popular demand.
In 2008, Jonathan Roxmouth paired up with Colyn to create a magical partnership that re-ignited the show, which has won no less than nine awards for Best Musical Production and Best Performance!
With exciting costumes and a wildly entertaining script, “A Handful of Keys” presents you with a performance of constant surprise, intelligence and wit, with music that will literally rock your socks off.
As the festival continues its emphasis on presentational novelty and collaboration, audiences can look forward to seeing such genres as afro-pop, jazz and opera in ways that are fresh and completely anti-stereotypical at the 13th edition of Hifa.
