MUTARE-BASED choral group Dangamvura Old Students’ Association failed to make it into the top three of the 37th Old Mutual National Choir Festival held in Thohoyandou in South Africa last weekend.
Limpopo SAPS Choir scooped the first prize while Capricorn Chorus was on position two. Chitungwiza Harmony Singers were seated on position three. Ten instead of 12 groups took part in the regional championships after Limpopo Chorale and Letaba Fet Choir pulled out.
Out of the 10, DOSA came out fifth in a competition the Dangamvura-based group described as tightly contested.
“The performance was tough. All choirs were very powerful. The adjudicators’ marks were very close. It was encouraging indeed to us and all choirs. We congratulate the directors of the event for being so forthright and determined in guiding the choirs to their best. We also congratulate ourselves for co-operation and doing our best in the event,” DOSA group manager Patrick Matsikenyiri said.
Old Mutual manager for Vhembe Area, Nemavhola Tshilidzi Godfrey, said the competition had gained prestige by producing internationally acclaimed artistes such as Pretty Yende, Phumeza Matsikiza, Pauline Malefane and Kelebogile Boikanyo.
“Old Mutual has invested millions over the years bringing choral music to communities. Some may see Old Mutual as a savings and investments company, but there is a lot we do to uplift communities.
“This choral competition is one of our investments to preserve South Africa’s choral heritage and promote arts – an important development for music.
