A GWANDA man has been sentenced to 12 months imprisonment after he hit and killed a pedestrian who was crossing a road.
Uteng Moyo (40) of Jahunda Suburb was convicted on his own plea of guilty to culpable homicide by Gwanda magistrate, Mrs Nomagugu Sibanda.
He was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment of which six months were suspended on condition he pays a $400 fine by December 30.
The remaining six months were suspended on condition that he does not commit a similar offence within the next five years.
Prosecuting, Miss Faith Mutukwa said Moyo committed the offence on August 24.
“On 24 August at around 7PM Moyo was driving a Volkswagen Golf vehicle along Soudan Street in the Gwanda CBD when he hit Lizanethe Mhlanga (44) who was crossing the road in the company of Ms Nonhlanla Ndlovu.
“Mhlanga sustained serious injuries as a result of the accident and was referred to the United Bulawayo Hospitals (UBH) where she died upon arrival. “A postmortem was carried out which confirmed that Mhlanga died as a result of the injuries she sustained after she was hit by the car,” she said. — @DubeMatutu
