FORMER Warriors defender Zvenyika “Shogi” Makonese is set to revive his career with Triangle if the two parties agree on terms this week.
“We are interested in Makonese joining us but we are still to finalise the deal. We are still having talks with him and we hope that something positive will come before the end of the week,” said Gishon Ntini, the Triangle coach.
Makonese, who started his football career as a goalkeeper at City Stars in Chiredzi, is planning to revive his career in the Lowveld after failing to get a club this season.
“I am not yet finished. I was born in Triangle and that is my home and I want to help Ntini, the people in Triangle and their team to maintain their Premiership status.
“Since I am getting a bit old I will revert to play as a defender and I want to partner Togara (Norman) my former teammate at City Stars and we are going to form a deadly combination,” said Makonese.
The defender who was brought to Shabanie Mine from Gaths Mine by Moses “Bambo” Chunga in 2003 was to be signed by Bob Solomons the Santos coach in 2004.
He later moved to Pirates in 2009 and had an unforgettable two seasons at the Absa Premiership giants as he featured in less than five games because most of the time he was warming the bench.
He later packed his bags and returned home to the asbestos miners and helped them fight relegation in 2011 under Luke Masomere.
He had disciplinary issues at the club besides playing well as a striker and at the end of the season he went back to South Africa.
Zimbabwe’s most respected coach, Sunday Chidzambwa, tried in vain to have the tall defender at Black Leopards but his efforts hit a brick wall.
The 35-year-old claims he was featuring for a Division One Mozambican side Disportiv.
It will however, be good news if the player manages to settle in Triangle and help Ntini’s club maintain their Premiership status.
