Duma Ndlovu Bids Farewell to Muvhango: The Final Curtain Falls

 Reporter

Veteran producer and playwright Duma Ndlovu took to social media this week to announce the end of an era — the final scenes of the legendary SABC 2 soapie Muvhango have been filmed.

In an emotional message titled “MUVHANGO: THE FINAL CURTAIN”, Ndlovu confirmed that production wrapped not at the SABC’s Auckland Park studios, but in Venda, at Ngwenani Ya Themeli — the very homestead that, for the past 28 years, has served as the iconic Thathe Royal Residence on-screen.

“There was something deeply magical about the final shoot,” Ndlovu reflected. “The crew were young South Africans — many not even born in 1997 when Muvhango first aired — but they carried the flame like they were there from the beginning.”

He noted how this generational handover was symbolic, with younger cast and crew drawing inspiration from the cultural legacy their parents had cherished.

The final episode is set to air in August 2025, closing the curtain on a show that redefined South African storytelling, celebrated indigenous languages, and gave voice to Venda culture in mainstream media.

In his heartfelt closing words, Ndlovu extended gratitude:
“To the cast and crew… Ro livhuwa. To every family and village that ever tuned in and saw themselves reflected: We thank you.

Unkulunkulu anibusise.”
He signed off with a poetic salute to heritage:

AmaGatsheni ayabonga… Nibahle nonke.
