AWARD-WINNING visual artist and co-founder of the Swiss-Zim Heritage Keith Zenda and celebrated visual artist Tonderai Mujuru took their painting narratives to the prestigious Hamptons Fine Art Fair.
The art fair took place on July 10 to 13 at the Southampton Fairgrounds in New York, United States. In an interview with Zimpapers Arts and Entertainment Hub, Zenda said the art fair provided a platform for him to share his stories, culture and perspectives with American audiences.
Some of his pieces were sold at the art fair.
The artist, who hails from the rural area of Chirumanzu, spoke about the significance of this opportunity.
“Exhibiting my art in America is a dream come true. Growing up, my family and those who recognised my talent, instilled in me a sense of purpose, telling me that I would one day make an impact in America.
“To now see my work showcased in the US is a testament to their belief in me.
“I hope American audiences are inspired by the stories, culture and perspectives I share through my art and that it fosters a deeper understanding and appreciation of Zimbabwean and African heritage.
“Born in the rural areas of Chirumanzu, I embarked on a journey of resilience, walking miles to school despite financial struggles and hunger. Raised by an incredibly strong single mom, I transformed rejection and doubt into motivation.
“Transferring schools became an opportunity to adapt and grow. Today, I proudly stand in Times Square, New York City, living proof that determination can take you far,” he said.
Muguru said he could not believe the opportunity.
“Still pinching myself (and this suspiciously freedom-shaped beard) to make sure I’m not dreaming. Who knew the ‘Land of Opportunity’ came with portion sizes that could feed my entire kumusha. Forever grateful to set foot on this soil,” he said.
From childhood sketches to masterful pencil portraits, Tonderai’s work showcases astonishing attention to detail, bringing each subject to life.
His talent has earned him recognition and numerous accolades.
Deeply rooted in the Ubuntu spirit, Tonderai’s art captures the essence of African culture and the profound connections within it.
His creations reflect Zimbabwe’s rich heritage and the bond between humans and animals.
