EMMANUEL Jalai has landed in Durban as one of Zimbabwe football’s most prized exports, sealing a headline move from Dynamos to Durban City in a deal that insiders describe as the biggest package ever handed to a Zimbabwean first time arrival in South Africa.
Durban City have snapped up the former Dynamos captain on a contract running to 2028, with an option that could stretch his stay to 2030, a long term commitment that signals how highly the club rates him.
Sources close to the negotiations say Jalai’s agreement includes a signing on fee that is double what he was offered by local clubs, both formally and informally, a number that turned the transfer from interest into inevitability.
While his weekly wage has been described as “modest” by those in his camp, the full package tells a different story, Durban City didn’t bring him in to make up numbers, they brought him in as a statement.
The move also closes a pursuit that has been building for years, with Durban City staying on the player’s trail even as other suitors tried to muscle in, including well funded clubs and reigning champions Scottland.
But those around Jalai insist the decision wasn’t driven by money alone, and that the way Durban City carried themselves throughout the chase mattered as much as the figures on the table.
“Durban City were the most consistent and their respect for the player was clear,” said a source close to the player.
“They didn’t just offer good money, they showed they truly valued him.”
Jalai leaves Dynamos as more than a senior player; he walks out as a captain who carried the badge through some of the club’s hardest stretches, and exits with his name lodged among the leaders who didn’t flinch when the noise got loud.
His departure triggered an emotional farewell from the Harare giants he served for six years, and the defender used social media to thank coaches, teammates, staff and the club’s vast support base.
“The honour of wearing the armband of this great club is a memory that will live with me forever,” Jalai wrote.
“I will FOREVER remain one of you. My love for the club will never die.”
Now in South Africa, Jalai steps into a new dressing room with immediate weight on his shoulders, and he does it as Durban City’s only Zimbabwean international, a detail that sharpens both the expectation and the spotlight.
