Durham end Zimbabwe tour on a high

ENGLISH county cricket club Durham ended their Zimbabwean tour on a high note after registering a 72 runs triumph over Northerns in a 50 over match played at Harare Sports Club yesterday.

After winning the toss and electing to bat first, Durham were bowled out for 216 runs in 42.2 overs courtesy of an Alex Lees half century before going on to wipe out Northerns for 174 runs in 34.4 overs to complete a clean sweep of the matches they played in the country.

Graham Clark and Less had a half century opening stand before the former fell for 29 runs off 36 balls in the 13th over. His partner Lees went on to score 83 runs from 98 deliveries to be the highest run getter in the match.
David Bedingham scored 32 runs for the visitors while Liam Trevaskis chipped in with 17 runs. Northerns captain, left arm spinner Wellington Masakadza starred with the ball for the home side, finishing with the best bowling figures of 3/38 in eight overs while off spinner Wessly Madhevere also took three wickets, giving away 42 runs in nine overs.

Craig Ervine’s half century was not enough to see the Northerns through as he fell for 50 runs after facing 52 balls. Ryan Burl scored 40 runs from 39 balls while Innocent Kaia contributed 29 runs from 38 balls as they failed to chase down the target and lose all matches played against the English side.

Liam Trevaskis picked up a five-wicket haul for the visitors, finishing with the figures, 5/29 in 8. 4 overs while Ben Raine and George Drissell had two wickets each.

The match concluded the counties’ (Durham and Glamorgan) visit to Zimbabwe which the two English counties were using as part of their pre-season programme. The tour was a full series after the two teams played three-day matches, T20s and 50 over matches against Zimbabwean select sides.

Durham were returning to Zimbabwe after their stint in 2020 was cut short due to the Covid-19 pandemic, while their counterparts, Glamorgan, were in the country for the first time since 1995. The conclusion of the tour means Zimbabwe will now shift focus to international cricket where the Chevrons are set to play against Netherlands in three One Day International (ODI) matches at Harare Sports Club starting next week on Tuesday. – @brandon_malvin
