THE City of Harare says it can now enforce penalties against people who litter following the granting of arresting and enforcement powers to local authorities.
The development is expected to strengthen the city’s efforts to curb littering and improve environmental cleanliness.
Speaking during a Ward 9 virtual service delivery feedback meeting on Thursday, Ward 9 Councillor Prince Mutebuka said the new enforcement powers would act as a deterrent and help reduce littering across the city.
“We recently got arresting powers. Mind you, we have had challenges of littering. It’s a culture issue and people are just throwing litter from the windows of their cars in town,” he said.
“Now that we have got these arresting powers, people can be fined and I know people don’t want to part with their dollars.
“We are going to see less littering in terms of that. That will also make work easier for Geo Pomona because people will now be putting litter where it has to be,” he said.
