Dynamos 2-2 Manica Diamonds

DYNAMOS were left ruing missed opportunities after surrendering a winning position against battling Manica

Diamonds in a dramatic Castle Lager Premier Soccer League clash at Sakubva Stadium yesterday.

What should have been a statement victory for Genesis Mangombe’s men instead became another reminder of the fine margins undermining their campaign.

For Manica Diamonds, the late equaliser carried the weight of a win. Locked in a fight to escape danger, Patrick Mandizha’s side showed the grit and belief that could prove decisive in the months ahead.

The contest also sparked debate over officiating, with referee Quedisani Dirwai at the centre of controversy following a string of decisions that angered the home crowd and unsettled both benches.

Dynamos began with authority and should have established a commanding lead before the interval. Their midfield movement repeatedly unsettled the hosts and carved openings, but wasteful finishing denied them the reward their dominance deserved.

The clearest chance fell to Leeroy Mavhunga inside seven minutes. With only goalkeeper Godfrey Chitsumba to beat, he dragged his effort wide — setting the tone for a frustrating afternoon in front of goal.

Manica Diamonds grew into the game and capitalised on rare uncertainty in the Dynamos box. Russel Kahiki reacted quickest in a crowded scramble on 26 minutes to put the hosts ahead and ignite the capacity crowd.

Six minutes later came the game’s most contentious moment. Charles Teguru appeared to have doubled the lead with a superb free kick that beat Dynamos goalkeeper Finnia Nfor. Celebrations were cut short when Dirwai dramatically reversed his decision, awarding Dynamos a foul instead — leaving players, officials and supporters baffled.

Though that incident threatened to overshadow proceedings, the contest remained open and fiercely fought.
Dynamos returned from the break with renewed purpose and finally found the cutting edge missing in the first half.

Perfect Chikwende’s inviting cross in the 53rd minute was calmly finished by Frank Agyemang to restore parity.
Momentum had shifted.

Seven minutes later, Moses Demera seemed to have completed the turnaround, capitalising on a mix‑up between Chitsumba and defender Farai Banda to tap into an empty net. At that stage, Dynamos looked in control and destined for all three points.

But their earlier wastefulness came back to haunt them.
Instead of killing off the contest, Dynamos left the door ajar. Manica Diamonds pressed on and were rewarded deep into stoppage time when Teguru — arguably the game’s standout performer — latched onto a loose ball and drilled

low beyond Nfor, sparking wild celebrations around Sakubva.

The equaliser completed a dramatic emotional swing. A match Dynamos looked set to win ended with the visitors aggrieved and the hosts jubilant with a hard‑earned point.

Mangombe admitted his side had only themselves to blame.

“I think this was an easy match we could have won by a wide margin, but my strikers wasted a lot of chances. They equalised late and I am still wondering why the officials gave eight minutes of added time. That was just too much,” said the Dynamos coach.

Mandizha, meanwhile, praised his players’ resilience in the face of setbacks, including controversial officiating and sustained pressure.

“I think we played well and with a bit of luck we could have won, but that is the nature of the game. We just hope to keep collecting points so we move out of the relegation zone. The good thing is we avoided defeat,” he said.
