Ecobank heist: Police suspect insider involvement in US$4 million robbery

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) have indicated that the US$4 million armed robbery at an Ecobank branch in Bulawayo likely involved insider assistance.

The heist, which occurred on October 3, 2024, saw six armed men storming the branch and escaping with a whooping US$4 million.

According to Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyathi, the heist is suspected to have involved insiders who leaked information about the movement of the money.

He confirmed that police are conducting thorough investigations to track down the culprits and ensure they are brought to justice.

“We stand by our position. Someone leaked information about the movement of money, and we are questioning all possible suspects,” Nyathi told The Herald.
he ZRP has since deployed special units to assist with the investigation, and the Ecobank branch has temporarily closed to allow for a comprehensive probe.

Commissioner Nyathi reassured the public that no effort would be spared in uncovering the truth.

“The investigations are ongoing, and we have dispatched teams to Bulawayo, we want to assure the nation that we will get to the bottom of this, we are leaving no stone unturned,” he added.

He also dismissed false social media reports that circulated after the incident. He added that the police will keep the public updated on any developments.

“I would like to also dismiss false social media reports that have been circulating about the case. We will advise the nation on the issue whenever necessary,” he said. (ihrare.com)
