ALOIS Bunjira is a very lucky man. It is now very clear that he survived a horrific car crash on Saturday morning whose death toll has now reached three.
Two people died on the spot when Bunjira’s BMW was involved in a head-on collision with an Isuzu truck along the Rusape-Nyanga Road.
The former Zimbabwe international forward was driving his car.
His girlfriend, Brenda Zvinorova, was the only passenger in that vehicle. Brenda was put on a life-support system but, after bravely fighting for her life for three days, she lost the battle.
Brenda and Bunjira were part of the NetOne Albun Marathon organising team.
Harare businessman, Andrew Rusike, who is the chairman of the organising team, told H-Metro that Bunjira and Brenda were in a serious relationship.
He said the two lived together in Westgate.
Rusike was one of the first people to reach the accident scene.
He said he was the one who pulled Brenda from the car.
Rusike said he could see that Brenda had suffered injuries on her hands. He said this was a business trip. They were on a trip to see if the NetOne Albun Marathon could be used to qualify for the Comrades Marathon.
They also had a representative from the Comrades Marathon and they had equipment which was supposed to be used to measure the NetOne Albun Marathon.
This was supposed to be a breakthrough for Bunjira and his team at the NetOne Albun Marathon.
It’s clear that they have been thinking big and now wanted to be part of the prestigious Comrades Marathon.
It’s a measure of the great work which Bunjira and his team at the NetOne Albun Marathon have done, over the past few years, that they were now thinking of linking their race with the Comrades Marathon.
It’s a measure of that great work that even the organisers of the Comrades Marathon were interested in partnering the NetOne Albun Marathon and had sent a representative for the certification of the local race as a qualifier for the prestigious South African race.
Brenda was a big part of the NetOne Albun Marathon and had worked tirelessly to build this race. Sadly, she won’t be part of its future after the tragic events this week.
It’s sad because she was very passionate about the marathon.
We also feel for Bunjira because he was certain that he had found a soul mate.
He wanted to settle with Brenda and, according to Rusike, wanted to marry her.
It’s a double blow for him.
However, we believe that he should use this week’s tragedy as fuel to power him to even come up with a better and bigger NetOne Albun Marathon.
That is the best way that he can honour Brenda for everything that she did to build this marathon.
We know it will be difficult but it has to be done.
He should even double his efforts to ensure that his race is certified to be part of the Comrades Marathon.
