EDITORIAL COMMENT : Don’t protect criminals

DESPITE their seemingly ‘tough guy’ characters, most criminals get desperate to conceal their evil deeds after committing heinous crimes.

They too look for ways of evading arrest by either threatening victims and informants.

But it seems the most common way for those that commit murder is to seek spiritual cleansing.

It seems murderers fear ‘ngozi’ or avenging spirits, and thus seek spiritual cleansing by prophets and traditional healers to escape both arrest and ngozi.

Some traditional healers and prophets cash in on these criminals.

For them, it’s easy money, whether such cleansing rituals work or not.

What is sad though is that most of these thugs are known in our communities.

It’s high time community spits them out so they can face justice for their crimes.

Protecting wicked people only brings more pain than gain.

Yesterday we carried a story about a Mabelreign self-styled prophet who tipped police to arrest three suspected murderers at his shrine.

The three allegedly killed a vendor in cold blood in the Avenues area following a row over a $200 change.

After stabbing the vendor to death, the trio sought spiritual cleansing from the prophet.

And kudos to the prophet, his conscience troubled him and he informed the police about the youthful suspected murderers while pretending to be preparing for cleansing.

We don’t know what motivated the prophet to call the police, but he did the right thing.

This unnamed prophet will be best remembered for helping police solve a murder case that might have gone cold.

That the suspects were nabbed less than 24 hours is all thanks to the prophet, who treasured the sanctity of life than profit.

His stance should be emulated by all faith healers and sangomas, and society at large to rid our communities of criminals.

Zimbabwe needs more people like the Mabelreign prophet to expose criminals.

We can’t afford communities that harbour known criminals.

The same applies to paddlers of dangerous drugs.

Drug pushers are well-known in our communities, but they remain on the loose because we are generally self-centred.

We believe that if drugs don’t affect our children or relatives, then it’s none of our business.

Some drug dealers approach sangomas and prophets for lucky charms.

This should never be allowed to happen.

Harbouring criminals is a punishable offence and the law must come hard on those that knowingly do so.

Zimbabwe can vastly reduce crime if every person becomes their brother’s keeper.

That way criminals will have no place to hide.

Lets reclaim our communities from criminals and those that harbour them by reporting them to the police.

For how long will the majority that are straight continue to be held hostage by criminals, who constitute a notorious minority.

Let’s all stand up against every form of crime to ensure criminals have no hiding place.
