MORNING and evening driving has become a nightmare in the capital.
It’s worse during peak hours as motorists will be racing against time.
Some drivers have turned into monsters as they no longer respect traffic rules.
It’s also sad to note how this cancer is fast spreading into all parts of the capital.
Unregistered kombi and pirate taxi drivers top the list of traffic rules offenders.
They intentionally disregard traffic rules, endangering passengers’ lives.
So daring are these errant drivers that they have the guts to drive on the wrong lane to beat traffic congestion.
This conduct is totally unacceptable as they are risking people’s lives.
Some top civil servants, who should lead the way in terms of observing the law, have even joined the act.
This new cancer is spreading on major roads in the capital where motorists are no longer adhering to traffic rules.
Last week, we carried a story about motorists who were breaking traffic rules along Bulawayo Road, near the LongCheng Plaza in the morning.
The scary scenes were captured on videos shared on our online platforms.
We managed to capture the registration plates of the offenders.
National police spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi, assured H-Metro that arrests will be made.
Although we are yet to get feedback from Ass-Comm Nyathi, at least, we got assurance that arrests will be effected.
This is the kind of language that we need to hear from the police chiefs.
However, action is the most important thing needed in this case to ensure that we bring sanity on the roads.
Surely this kind of behaviour is totally unwanted.
A good example should be set and send a strong message to would-be offenders.
As a law-abiding nation, we can’t let motorists behave like monsters on the roads.
It’s high time motorists, especially unregistered kombis and private taxi drivers are arrested and prosecuted for endangering people’s lives through dangerous driving.
These barbaric acts by drivers intentionally breaking traffic rules should come to an end.
The VID needs to step up and deal with rogue drivers.
If it means impounding such vehicles and revoking the driver’s licences of those disregarding traffic rules, then so be it.
In addition, imposing a ban on such drivers is another solution to ensure that we bring sanity on our roads.
Failure to take action against these monsters will lead to the continued loss of life.
With the festive season fast approaching, traffic police, the Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe and the VID need to step up their game and bring sanity on the roads.
Campaigns and action against motorists breaking our traffic rules should start now.
Motorists should also comply to ensure that we win this battle, which continues to put people’s lives at risk.
Failure by motorists to comply will lead to unnecessary loss of life.
Losing life, through dangerous driving, is totally unacceptable since it’s something, which can be easily addressed.
All stakeholders need to combine forces and weed out the monsters on our roads.
